Potentially hazardous mold is forcing hundreds of Westbury renters out of their new luxury apartments.
Archstone Westbury management has given about 400 tenants until March 31 to move out. Owners of the gated community across from the Source Mall said water has seeped into all 21 buildings. Repairs could take up to a year, during which time electricity will be shut off.
The complex's management is compensating residents on their last month's rent and giving some relocation money.
Some tenants complain they've seen the mold and have even become sick. The evictions have left many renters in tough positions.
"I don't know where we're going to go," said Anthony Gibbone, who lives on a fixed Social Security income.
Pregnant mother of two Tina Toyloy, who is due in March, said she's also at a loss.
The Town of Hempstead inspected the site, but said it's not responsible. "We don't inspect for architecture or design flaws, which Archstone had indicated may be a possibility," said town spokesman Mike Deery. He added, "It's the property owner's responsibility."
