Long Island's COVID-19 positivity rate has stayed below 3% for several weeks and some residents are hesitant to get another vaccine dose.
According to the governor's office, Long Island has seen close to 7,000 people die from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic. Northwell Health doctors say that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending booster shots for those over the age of 65 or for those ages 18-64 with an underlying medical condition.
Dr. David Hirschwerk, an infectious disease expert at Northwell Health, says that getting a booster will add significant protection especially against the delta variant. Hirschwerk also says it will likely protect against another uptick with the holidays approaching.
He says that being vaccinated has translated to fewer hospitalizations and fewer deaths on Long Island.
Pfizer is also seeking authorization for its vaccine for children ages 5 to 11. If authorized, this would be the first COVID-19 vaccine for younger children.
An FDA vaccine advisory panel is scheduled to discuss the request in two weeks.
Infectious disease doctors at Northwell Health say they recommend getting vaccinated against both COVID-19 and the flu and that it's safe to get both vaccines at the same time.
