Residents of a Syosset mobile home park have been served eviction notices ahead of the holidays - and one trailer was already towed away.
The HOPE Association advocates for the residents of the mobile park off Jericho Turnpike in Syosset. The home of Barbara Pedote, president of the group, was removed Friday morning.
"I guess they figured if they get rid of the president, they get rid of the problem," says Pedote.
According to Pedote, the evictions are a result of ongoing legal wrangling between park owner STP Associates and the residents. In the past, residents have challenged STP Associates' claim to the land and fought off evictions. The residents claim STP Associates wants them out so that it can redevelop the land.
Neighbors of Pedote tell News 12 Long Island that they're worried one of their homes could be next.
An attorney for STP Associates responded with a statement that reads, "The evictions at the Syosset mobile home park are taking place in full compliance with the law."
The Nassau County Sherriff's Department would not tell News 12 Long Island if Pedote was singled out, but did say that it had a lawful court order for the eviction.
Park residents and STP Associates will be back in court on Monday and Tuesday.
