Mineola Fire Department brings Santa into homes in Operation Santa
It's a Christmas tradition in Mineola -- the fire department brings Santa to homes of children in the village as part of its Operation Santa program.
According to the fire department, for 12 days, Santa and his helpers visit about 250-300 homes and celebrate with 1,000 to 1,500 children.
"The juniors are a major part of this program," says Fire Chief Jeffrey Clark. "If it wasn't for them we'd have a tough time meeting all of the demands that residents put in for Santa to visit their homes."
Those who visit the homes during the holiday season say it's a good feeling to see children wanting at the door for Santa. They say the kids are usually very excited and active.
The Mineola mayor says feedback on the program is very positive.
