Officials are eyeing a new plan to try to ease parking congestion around the Mineola train station and downtown village.

The yearlong study recommends Mineola build a new 425-space multilevel garage; consider setting up app-based parking paid with mobile phones; guaranteed LIRR commuter parking but at higher than the current prices; and raise street parking from 75 cents to $1. 

 

Some village residents and customers complain the cost of building more parking is too expensive. Others are worried about a hike in parking fees. Mayor Strauss says much of the construction costs could come from federal and state grants. 



"It's not always about revenue, it's about providing a service, and we need parking in downtown Mineola - severely," says Strauss.

A previous parking garage at the same village location was deemed unsafe and had to be torn down in 2008.
