Just as a packed Shea Stadium crowd started to think about marching out, the New York Mets brought on the hit parade to turn around their home opener.
Playing to a full, excited throng of blue-and-orange faithful, the Mets scored seven runs in the eighth inning. They eventually went on to a thrilling 11-5 come-from-behind victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. Second baseman Jose Valentin scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded to take a 6-5 lead.
Despite an underwhelming start by pitcher John Maine and a huge homer by Phillies slugger Ryan Howard, the Mets capitalized on shortstop Jimmy Rollins' error to keep the pivotal eighth inning alive.
The Mets and Phillies face off again Wednesday at 7:10 p.m.
