Metro-North is hosting events to promote safety at its train stations in honor of National Rail Safety Week.

The Cos Cob train station is just one of several stations where Metro-North volunteers will come out today to speak with commuters.

The non-profit Operation Lifesaver Incorporated works in partnership with the U.S Department of Transportation among other organizations to observe National Rail Safety Week each year. Their mission is to reduce collisions, fatalities, and injuries at highway-rail crossings and to prevent trespassing on or near railroad tracks. They say a person or vehicle is hit by a train every three hours across the country.

Metro-North volunteers will be at several train stations and grade-crossing locations in Connecticut and New York today and tomorrow.

On Thursday, the volunteers will have a table set up at Grand Central during the morning and evening rush hour.

On Friday, the public is encouraged to wear red for Red Out for Rail Safety Day.

Metro-North's president says providing a safe experience for commuters is a top priority.
