Priests and parishioners gathered at St. Anne?s Roman Catholic Church in Garden City Wednesday to mourn a fallen monsignor.
Police say 79-year-old Monsignor William Costello was mowed down by a habitual drunk driver Tuesday night on Woodbine in East Hampton. According to authorities, 42-year-old Karen Fisher was driving with a suspended license and a blood alcohol content (BAC) three times the legal limit. Fisher?s license was suspended from a DUI she received in April, when she was arrested at four times the legal BAC with her children in the backseat.
Costello?s funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Anne?s, where he lived in his retirement. Parishioners describe Costello, who served as a priest for 54 years, as a kind and energetic man who loved sports and the church. They say he was the type of person who would do anything for anyone, and they say he will be sorely missed in the community.
