A doctor in East Meadow saved a fellow doctor's life in the middle of the coronavirus battle.
In May, Dr. Faruque Ahmed was working around the clock taking care of coronavirus patients at an East Meadow urgent care. When he started having a severe headache, Ahmed ignored it, believing it was caused by the endless hours of work.
"I said, 'No, this is stress. We are seeing so many COVID patients and taking care of them,'" said Ahmed.
But when Ahmed called out of work, the medical director at the urgent care where he works became concerned. Dr. Daniel La didn't like what he was hearing so he set up an appointment for a CAT scan.
When Ahmed did not show up for the CAT scan, his colleagues knew something was wrong and they took action.
"He told me he was having worsening headaches, not feeling right and he was just getting really, really down," said La.
That's when the decision was made to rush Ahmed to St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn where the medical staff quickly discovered he had a massive brain bleed.
The emergency brain surgery was successful.
"It could happen to anybody. Our body and life is very fragile, you need to remember that every moment counts," said Ahmed.
When Ahmed woke from his surgery, the first thing he asked his surgeon was when could he go back to work and see his patients.
