A Medford man who is accused of fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend was arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip Saturday.
Prosecutors said 49-year-old Wayne Chambers repeatedly stabbed his on-again, off-again girlfriend of seven years, Sandra McIntosh, in her chest, back and neck last Thursday. They said he then left her to die in a wooded area in Holtsville.
Members of McIntosh's family were also present at Chambers' arraignment.
"Just to listen to how he brutally stabbed her, my heart breaks, I just can't take it. I'm just shaking," said McIntosh's sister, Sophia Caines.
Police said Chambers killed McIntosh after picking her up from a shift at Stony Brook University Hospital where she worked as a nurse. Police said he had promised to move his things out of her house because she broke up with him.
According to prosecutors, Chambers was driving erratically before stabbing McIntosh inside and outside the car.
"She just finished 12 hours as a registered nurse on her feet all day. I don't think my sister had the strength to endure what he was doing to her," Caines said.
Prosecutor said Chambers has a criminal record, including a 1997 arrest for felony murder and 1999 conviction for robbery in the first degree. They said Chambers was on the run for seven days before police arrested him in Newburgh.
Chambers pleaded not guilty to a charge of second-degree murder, and he's being held without bail and is due back in court Aug. 4.
McIntosh's family said they'll be present for every one of his court appearances until justice is served.
The McIntosh family says Sandra McIntosh's funeral will be held Aug. 6 in St. Albans, Queens.
A GoFundMe page has been established to help the family with funeral expenses.
