Officials say a potentially deadly weapon was confiscated before it could make it to a prisoner at the Riverhead Correctional Facility.

According to the Suffolk Sheriff's Office, a meat cleaver was found in an Amazon package addressed to an inmate last week.

Other permitted items in the package were delivered to the inmate.

All packages that arrive at the facility are opened and inspected as per the state.

"Careful inspection and processing of all mail and packages before they enter the correctional facility is critical,” says Sheriff Errol Toulon.
