? Republican presidential contender Sen. John McCain attended a fundraising event Friday at the Upper Brookville home of a local real estate magnate.
Organizers said they raised more money than they had planned. One count put the evening?s total at over $340,000.
McCain, who has been sliding in the polls, comes to Long Island two days after the camp of rival Mitt Romney announced the former Massachusetts governor topped the $1 million contribution mark in McCain?s home state of Arizona.
Mark Broxmeyer, a real estate developer and longtime Republican fundraiser, hosted McCain. Broxmeyer is also chairman of the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs, an influential Washington think tank.
Earlier this week, McCain dropped to single digits in an Iowa poll. At 6 percent, he trails fellow Republicans Mitt Romney (25 percent), former Senator Fred Thompson (17 percent), former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (15 percent) and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee (7 percent).
McCain has another event planned for Saturday in Southhampton.
