City leaders marked a major milestone on Sunday, announcing that more than 3,000 illegal guns have been taken off the streets so far this year.

Officials said it is an average of 14 guns per day for seven straight months, and the move is a step in the right direction when it comes to reducing crime.

Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch joined other local and city leaders at the 42nd Precinct, where dozens of confiscated firearms were on display – from rifles and revolvers to pink and purple pistols.

Adams said, so far this year, the city is seeing the lowest number of shootings and homicides in recorded history. The mayor added that under his administration, there is a 54% decrease in shootings and a 36% drop in homicides citywide.

“These are just stats to some, but they’re more than stats to us,” Adams said. “Thousands of guns off our streets means thousands of lives, thousands of families protected from violence.”

With this latest announcement, the city said officers have pulled more than 22,700 illegal guns off the streets since Adams took office in January 2022.
