State troopers say a dog was found tied to a light pole early Monday on the westbound side of the Southern State Parkway.
The discovery was made at around 5:30 a.m. near Exit 21, but it is not clear how long the mastiff was there.
The white female mastiff had a dog bowl filled with food and a note next to it, saying that the dog is 4 years old, may have issues with fleas and to "see that she gets good care."
Officers say the dog appears to be healthy. It was taken to the Hempstead Town Animal Shelter.
The Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter said that the dog was not microchipped.
State police are asking any witnesses or anyone with information to call 631-756-3300.
