Several Massapequa residents say their tap water has an unmistakable green tint, and it’s making them unsure if it’s safe to drink.
John Delaney says he first noticed the chlorophyll-colored shade in May. The water provider, Liberty Utilities, has flushed the water main at least five times, but the problem persists.
Delaney often brings his two young daughters to a relative’s home to give them baths because of the green water.
“We should not be bathing, or cooking, or drinking this water,” Delaney says.
Rosemarie Coats lives nearby and she also has green water at home.
“We’ve been just drinking bottled water, giving our dog bottled water and cooking with bottled water because we don’t know what’s in there," says Coats.
In a statement, Liberty Utilities wrote: “We continue to meet all federal, state and local water quality standards... discolored water is not a health hazard.”
The source of the discoloration is not clear.
“I want them to find out where this green water is coming from, and I want them to fix it," says Coats.
