The Massapequa International Little League Softball team is another step closer to its goal of becoming World Series champions.

Dozens of fans gathered at Jackie Reilly's Bar and Grill in Bethpage as the local team advanced to the next round of the tournament with a 6-5 win over its New England opponent.

Jennifer Carson, manager of the restaurant, says the coach of the girls' softball team is a regular customer. She says she was honored to host a watch party for the Long Island team.

"Last year, they got almost as far and this year they did," Carson says.

Those who came out to cheer on the girls say it means a lot to the town to see the girls continue on their journey.

The Massapequa softball team will next play against Latin American Region on Thursday in Greenville, North Carolina.
