The manhunt for murder suspect Harpal Hira has turned into an international search.
Hira is accused of attacking his 22-year-old estranged wife and stabbing his mother-in-law to death during a birthday celebration on Saturday. Hira, a native of India, has not been found since that night.
Nassau police are considering the possibility the suspect may have fled the country.
"What we've been doing is giving the information to the news outlets in India about the assault and murder - giving them the full description of the suspect, photograph of him and details," says Detective Sgt. Anthony Repalone.
Authorities say they've also alerted border crossings and airports across the country.
Despite the international efforts, police still believe Hira is in the metropolitan area and say he might be in a heavily Indian community.
"For example in New York City, Queens, places of that nature, where he may have associates who may be able to assist him or at least keep him away from the authorities," says Repalone.
Authorities are asking anyone with information on Hira's whereabouts to call Crimestoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
