Manhasset school board accepts superintendent's resignation after sexual harassment allegations
CLARIFICATION: In an earlier version of this story reported that Dr. Vincent Butera was “found guilty” of sexually harassing a teacher. We understand that some of our viewers might view the phrase “found guilty” to imply conviction in a court of law.  To clarify, Dr. Butera was found to have violated the District’s sexual harassment policy by an independent investigation performed by a law firm at the District’s request. There were no legal proceedings or a finding by the Board of Education. Details of what the violation constituted were not made public, and may not have risen to the legal definition of sexual harassment.
The Manhasset school superintendent resigned Monday nearly a year after he allegedly violated the district's sexual harassment policy.
The Manhasset School Board accepted Vincent Butera's resignation after an independent investigation found he had violated the district’s sexual harassment policy.
The incident had students and parents calling for Butera to leave the school, with some students even staging a walkout.
Butera has said his actions were misconstrued.
He has been on a leave of absence for nine months.
Peter Regas has a child in the 10th grade at Manhasset High School. He says the board didn't give parents enough information about the accusations.
"People can make an accusation and his career is ruined," Regas says. "His reputation is ruined."
Butera's contract ends in June 2023.
Guarav Pass is the acting superintendent. There is no word on whether he will be made the permanent superintendent.
