Opponents of a proposed video slot game facility in Westbury have a new and powerful ally.
Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano sent out a tweet saying he thinks the former Fortunoff store near the Roosevelt Field Mall is a bad location for a gaming facility. Critics say the area is already way too congested.
"I stand with residents in opposition to Fortunoff as the site of gaming in Nassau and have made my position known to OTB," Mangano said in the tweet.
Mangano turned down News 12's request for an interview and would not speak about the issue when addressed after a non-related news conference Tuesday.
Nassau OTB is run by Republicans and the disagreement over the site selection represents a rare rift. Normally, Republicans in Nassau show nothing but unity in public. Residents who are opposed to the site hope it means they will get their way and have the facility put somewhere else.
Nassau OTB issued a statement saying it will address all the concerns of elected officials and residents about the Westbury site.
Suffolk and Nassau are each allowed to build a facility following a referendum approved by voters in 2013 that also legalized casinos upstate.
