At least one official is still hopeful that the New York Islanders may someday return to Nassau County, according to Executive Ed Mangano.
"I certainly believe that we will see the return of the Islanders at some point," Mangano said.
The team is set to begin playing home games at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn this coming season.
Mangano made the comments during an interview with WFAN Sports anchor and blogger Peter Schwartz.
"He paused for a second before that quote came out," Schwartz said. "He wasn't blowing smoke or anything. He was very, very serious."
But not everyone is buying in. Islanders fan Pat McGrory of East Meadow said he's not about to get his hopes up.
"The politicians couldn't get it done, so I don't put much stock into what he's saying," McGrory said. "I hope he knows something that I don't."
