Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano delivered his seventh State of the County address Tuesday night, touting the county's creation of new jobs, housing and business opportunities.
The unemployment rate for the county sits at 4.2 percent, Mangano said, and more than 25,000 new jobs have been added. He discussed new housing opportunities for millennials, which he said will allow them to stay on Long Island, and the redevelopment of Nassau Coliseum and surrounding property, which is underway.
Mangano highlighted strides made in keeping Nassau's communities safer. He said crime is down 25 percent since 2010, and shootings are down about 24 percent.
He spoke of the ongoing war on heroin, which took the lives of nearly 200 residents last year. Mangano said the county is battling heroin and opioid abuse with awareness, education, treatment and enforcement.
As for the county's bottom line, Mangano said that Nassau froze property taxes for five years and cut $330 million in wasteful spending -- equivalent to a 25 percent property tax increase.
During the address, Mangano also called for the creation of a public financing system in Nassau. He said it would be the best way to remove political influence from the county's contracting system.
