A Long Beach man convicted of killing a teen in Rockville Centre was sentenced to 18 years to life in prison Thursday.
Maxwell Sherman, 20, confessed in April that he strangled Lauren Daverin, 18, of Lynbrook, in August 2013. He pleaded guilty to murder in the second degree.
Daverin's remains were discovered on the Mill Pond footbridge between Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road in Rockville Centre.
Prosecutors say she was hanging out with friends on the footbridge on the night she was killed. Sherman, who had recently moved back to Long Beach with his parents, was among the group.
Sherman apologized for the murder and read a brief statement in court saying he could "offer no excuse" but that he was "not in the right frame of mind." His attorney said that alcohol played a "large role in what happened."
Sherman will be eligible for parole in 16 years, when he is 36 years old.
