One person has been arrested and one suspect is still on the loose after police say they tried to rob a man in West Hempstead.Officials say the suspects approached the 35-year-old man when he was in his driveway around 9:30 p.m. Monday. One of the men, 30-year-old Jose Celis, allegedly had a gun. According to officials, the victim, who had a licensed handgun on him, decided to fight back. Cops say Celis fired first and the victim fired back. A total of seven shots were fired, police say. The suspects then fled.
Neighbors tell News 12 Long Island that the man owns a check cashing business and that they are glad he decided to protect himself.
Police arrested Celis, of West Hempstead, in the incident. He is charged with attempted murder. They are still searching for the other suspect.No one was injured, but a stray shot went through the bathroom window of a neighboring home.
Police believe the victim was justified in protecting himself.
