The man accused of selling a drug that led to the fatal overdose of a Garden City teen faced a judge on Tuesday.
Grace Wrightington, 17, died after taking pills pressed to look like oxycodone that Nassau District Attorney Anne Donnelly says were laced with fentanyl in July 2023.
Officials say testing on blue pills in Grace's purse revealed they contained fentanyl.
Prosecutors say Daquan Booker approached Grace while she was walking home from Garden City High School and sold her the pills on at least two occasions.
The district attorney says that just 12 hours before her death, the 17-year-old took a video of herself panicking and saying she thought she may have ingested fentanyl.
Booker was indicted for criminal possession of a controlled substance and criminal sale of a controlled substance.
He pleaded not guilty and was released with an ankle monitor.
The Nassau DA is calling for the passage of Chelsea’s law to be able to charge a person with manslaughter when they know a controlled substance is likely to cause a death and they distribute or sell it.
Booker is due in Suffolk County court Wednesday on a separate case. He can face up to nine years in jail if convicted.
