A Queens man convicted of killing a young police officer from Massapequa has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Demetrius Blackwell was convicted of shooting Detective Brian Moore in the head in 2015.
Moore, 25, and his partner were on routine patrol when they saw Blackwell adjust something on his waistband. When the two plainclothes officers questioned him, Blackwell shot Moore.
Before the sentence was handed down, Blackwell's attorney asked the judge to consider Blackwell's history, including what he called a compromised brain.  The judge didn't buy it.
“To make that simple for your compromised brain, you're going to die in prison,” said Judge Gregory Lasak. “Advise the defendant of his right to appeal and get his smirking face out of this courtroom.”
In addition to the life without parole sentence, Blackwell was also sentenced to 40 years to life for the attempted murder of Brian Moore's partner.
The judge said he's recommending that Blackwell be sent to the "northernmost prison on the Canadian border" where he's cold and as far away from his family as possible.
Many of Moore’s fellow officers packed the courtroom when Blackwell was sentenced for first-degree murder. Moore's family and the PBA held a news conference after the court appearance saying they were happy with the sentencing. His father, Sgt. Raymond Moore, said he wished the death penalty was possible.
"I would love to see this animal put down. To me, this would be true justice," said Sgt. Raymond Moore, Detective Brian Moore's father.
