Suffolk police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a Brooklyn man who was being questioned by Southampton police Monday.
Southampton police say officers were interviewing 26-year-old Tony Curtis Bradway in relation to an investigation. During the interview, Bradway tried to swallow a bag of cocaine, officers say.
Detective Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick says the officer told Bradway to spit out the drug, but he chewed faster. The officer tried to prevent Bradway from swallowing the powder and bag by Tasering him twice. Bradway then spit out some of the powder and remnants of the plastic bag.
Bradway was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where he died Monday evening. Fitzpatrick says Bradway told hospital officials he swallowed between 5 and 6 grams of cocaine.
Suffolk police would not comment on the use of Taser by the officer.
