A man was arrested for scamming a Suffolk County man out of thousands of dollars.
In 2024, a Centereach man was experiencing computer issues and contacted what he thought was a tech support service that he found through an internet search, police say.
That’s when Ande Jiang, 27, of Highland Mills, NY, pretended to be a service representative and told the victim he was owed a $50 refund.
Suffolk police tell News 12 the victim was then told $20,000 was accidentally sent to him and he would need to return it.
A meetup was arranged in a Centereach parking lot, where the man handed over $19,950 in cash, the difference minus his actual refund.
Following an investigation by Financial Crimes Unit detectives, the Orange County man was identified as the person responsible and was extradited from Connecticut where he was in custody on another case.
