Authorities say a homeless man was arrested for abandoning two caged pit bulls in a parking lot in Bohemia earlier this month.
Randy Carnahan, 34, was charged with two counts of animal cruelty after allegedly leaving the dogs behind Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza on Veterans Highway on Oct. 5.
Tara Wolf, a bartender at the restaurant, says she was shocked to learn about Carnahan's arrest because he told her he was the one who found the pit bulls and called 911.
"He was acting so sincere. He was like, 'I don't know who would leave them here,'" says Wolf.
Wolf says by the time police arrived, Carnahan had disappeared. Authorities say they tracked him down using old-fashioned detective work.
Chief Roy Gross, of the Suffolk SPCA, says one of the dogs was microchipped, which led them to the original owner.
"From there, we traced it back to what actually occurred," says Gross.
SPCA officers arrested Carnahan in the parking lot where the pit bulls were abandoned.
The SPCA says the pit bulls are now at an animal shelter and will be offered for adoption.
