A 20-year-old man was arraigned on petit larceny and criminal mischief charges after police say he was captured on video stealing from the poor box at a West Islip church.
Authorities say Matthew Corwin, of West Babylon, stole about $20 on two separate occasions from Our Lady of Lourdes Church. They say he took the poor box into the bathroom and smashed it open to take the cash. Police say Corwin admitted to being under the influence of marijuana when he stole from the church in January and again last week.
Investigators arrested Corwin Monday when they spotted him walking near the church. They say the church's surveillance video was key to catching him. Corwin was released after his arraignment and is due back in court June 3.
