The Main Street Market Food Pantry in Riverhead is raising money to purchase a refrigerated truck.

Organizers tell News 12 that the cost of the cold van is $75,000.

Currently, the local pantry which is part of Rise Life Services uses a standard van for food delivers to families in need.

They say a refrigerated truck is necessary to keep perishable foods safe during long trips.

"It's cold out, so we can transfer frozen foods and dairy products safely. However, once the weather gets warmer that will be more difficult for us to deliver frozen foods to more families in need," explained Joann Vitale, of Rise Life Services.

Each year, the local pantry serves about 150 families within the Riverhead area and surrounding communities.

The group will be hosting a fundraiser at the Long Island Aquarium on April 1.
