Surf’s up, Long Island! Natures Shapes in Oakdale manufactures custom surfboards and paddleboards.
Surfers on the South Shore and all over the world are riding the waves on the boards.
Mike Becker loves to work with his hands. The passionate surfer started the business in 1993.
"As a kid, I struggled in school, my mother wanted me to read books and to get more involved in academics, and so she got me these books online on how to build a surfboard, so I started messing around in my basement and I built a shed in my backyard and started building surfboards," said Becker.
Becker outgrew that shed and now builds surfboards in an Oakdale warehouse and ships them out at his surf shop in Sayville.
As News 12 has reported, Natures Shapes helped a Jericho teen make the first adaptive surfboard in the U.S., providing people with disabilities an opportunity to catch some waves.
Becker says seeing the board from the sketches on the paper to the full completion is the best part.
