This morning we are hearing from local leaders who are making sure you are staying safe on the roads today. Joining us now to talk more about this in Oyster Bay is the town supervisor, Joe Saladino. Joe, good morning to you. We just saw some video Jonathan Gordon shared with us, uh, of a car spinning out. Good to see more of that this morning with these freezing temperatures. That's right, Rich. It is treacherous, of course, and we are focused on getting as much sand and salt down. We had our sanding and plowing operation all night long. A big shout out to all the town of Oyster Bay employees. You heard Mr. Dickson talking about how good the roads are in Oyster Bay. That's because our teams have been out since yesterday 5 p.m. getting the salt down early. 8 o'clock, the plow operations began and they went on all. Night our plows are still out there. We have about 150 drivers, 170 pieces of equipment in total out there, and now we are going to be proactive, but it is treacherously cold. The black ice is very dangerous. If you do not have to drive today, please stay off the roads, and it's very helpful if you could get your cars up on your driveway, on your lawn, wherever you can, so we can do that full curb to curb plowing. In addition to that, every single day this week we'll be going out with a special sand and salt crew to make sure that as black ice develops, we'll get lots of salt on the roads, especially near the schools, near all the arteries, and we will continue to make sure in the town of Oyster Bay our residents are safe on the road, but please don't drive today if you don't have. to once we get a lot of salt on that road and we have lots of sun coming down, that along with the friction of the tires will clear up quite a bit and we'll start to see less and less ice. Our meteorologist Rich Hoffman says that this deep freeze is gonna go to Thursday, so we gotta be aware of the situation out there. Good advice from oyster-based supervisor Joe Saldino. Joining me now to break down what we need to know and Huntington is the highway superintendent there, Andre Sorrentino. Andre, good morning. Thanks for joining us. We know you've been out throughout the night. What are the conditions like? Uh, right now, what we have, we're experiencing a lot of, uh, icing up. We're trying to get ahead of that. Hopefully, that sun comes out and, uh, we can get the temperature up and, uh, the salt can start working. Uh, a little, little cold this morning and, uh, we've been out since yesterday, around 4 o'clock, uh, crews came in, uh, and then, you know, the men and women that work here in Huntington, they hit it hard and We're just trying our best to stay on top of it because now it's icing up. And you might have that situation, Andre, where the sun comes, you get a little snow melt, then it freezes up again. We're gonna be in this for a few days, so people really need to be careful, especially for black ice, right? 100%. You, you, you stumble upon that, you don't even know you hit it. You go around a turn and there it is. It pops up on you. Next thing you know, you, you know, you, your car's turning sideways on you. You don't even know why, but you hit a, you know, you hit a patch of ice and you don't even know where it came from. The melt off is the problem. We were just, uh, doing a story you probably heard of, of doctors warning about being careful out in these conditions as we watch video of a car spinning out there. But, uh, even shoveling, even clearing the roadways, Andre, even for your cruises, you gotta be careful. Uh, no, they had to get some rest, you know, they had to take it easy. You know, you, you put in 24 hours. Next thing you know, you know, you, you don't wanna fall asleep at the wheel. Um, that's the worst thing. So we're trying to like break it down. If somebody gets tired, we bring them back to the office. take care of what we got to take care of, get a little refresher, get a little coffee, have an espresso, you're good, you know what I'm saying? And this morning we are hearing from local leaders who are making sure you're staying safe out on the roads today and not just the roads. Joining us now to break down what we need to know is the MTA CEO and chairman Jano Liber. Jano, thanks for joining us this morning. Uh, we've got these freezing conditions now and you have ice melting and then refreezing. What will it mean for the rails? Well, listen, as your Thunderbolt team was just, uh, uh, conveying, uh, the, the ice has real impacts. So we, we've been working overnight with hundreds of people in our deicing and patrol trains and paying attention to critical switches, which is key to railroading, um, but there are some impacts to service this morning on the Port Jefferson line and even more, more on the, on the main line, uh, from Ron Cooma in Um, we have a couple of switches that are, that are iced up and that has delayed service just a little bit, but the whole team has been working overnight, uh, to make sure that we are ready to run service today and the Long Island Railroad is operating and I think given the conditions on the road, may be the safest and best way to travel for a lot of your Long Islanders today. What about platforms and parking lots, uh, you know, we all know it's icy and it's wet, but if you're in a rush, you're trying to catch that train, maybe you're forgetting. It could be dangerous. It's a, it's a really good point. Uh, we, we do a ton of work to make sure that platforms are clear. Um, the, uh, the, there may be some variety in the, in the snow conditions in parking lots, so. Be careful, um, but absolutely snow removal and all that, you know, tons and tons of deicing material, snow melt, and our folks, hundreds and hundreds of people have been at work overnight to make sure that those conditions are as safe as possible.
