More people are looking to get tested for COVID-19 amid news of the omicron variant.

With more holidays coming up, Long Islanders are looking to get tested for the virus ahead of meeting with family and friends.

Medical director at AFC Urgent Care Dr. Daniel La says around Thanksgiving he saw a 30% to 40% increase in the number of people coming in to get a COVID test.

"A lot of patients, what they do is they get tested before coming to visit their family," La says. "And then they usually get tested again after the holidays."

State-run mass testing sites have been closed for months, so many people are having to find a different place to get checked.

The New York state Department of Health has a resource online where you can type in your zip code and find the nearest testing sites.

Those waiting to get tested at the City MD in Levittown say the entire process took about two hours - from the time they got on line, got tested and got their results from a health care professional.

City MD says, "Our teams are working hard to safely accommodate the high patient demand for both COVID-19 testing and for typical urgent care needs."

La says it's a good idea to get tested because "it's going to mitigate some of the risk."

Some locations offer free testing and others go through your insurance company.
