With gas prices at close to an all-time high, many Long Islanders are considering shorter road trips this Memorial Day weekend.
A gallon of unleaded gasoline costs an average of $3.27 on Long Island, according to AAA. The organization says that price is just 6 cents shy of the record.
Seaford resident Colin Kowalski said gas prices have affected the way he drives.
"I'm not stepping on the gas as hard and I'm not braking as hard," Kowalski said. "I'm driving like an old man."
AAA representatives said gas prices may not stop people from taking trips, but it is certainly affecting where they choose to go. That could mean heavier traffic locally.
"A lot of people are going to take shorter trips, so it's easy to imagine it's going to be very busy this holiday weekend," said Robert Sinclair of the Automobile Club of New York.
