Long Islanders were among hundreds of people who protested a plan to house asylum seekers near the Nassau County border.
The state and City of New York plan to build a Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center in the parking lot of Creedmoor Psychiatric Center.
The city says the asylum seekers who will be moved there will be all men.  People against the plan believe it is too close to their neighborhoods.
New York city Mayor Eric Adams said, “We understand community concerns and want to assure them we and the state are working to ensure that the site is well-managed and that any potential disruptions minimized.”
The facility could be up and operating in the coming weeks.
