Nov. 27 marked Giving Tuesday, a day for Americans to give back after the colossal shopping rush of Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday.
Giving Tuesday may not be as well-known as other days, but it's one on which not-for-profits like the Suffolk County United Veterans depend. The organization helps homeless veterans to get back on their feet.
The group is trying to raise $200,000 this year to renovate a kitchen and dining room area at the group's Yaphank facility.
When giving to any charity or organization, on any day, it's important you do your research before making a donation.
The New York State Office of the Attorney General recommends researching a charity's financial records before giving any money. It also says you should not be pressured into making donations by telemarketers or emotional appeals. Never give out any personal information like Social Security or bank account numbers.
And finally, experts say don't give cash -- instead write a check or use a credit card to make a donation.
