Many Americans are still waiting for the free COVID-19 tests from the federal government.
The U.S. Postal Service say there is enormous demand for the test kits and they’re shipping them out as quickly as they’re being received, but some Long Islanders are still waiting.
“I’m just trying to be patient and hoping they come,” one person says.
A Postal Service website started taking requests for kits on Jan. 18 and a White House press release says they were supposed to have shipped by Jan. 31 at the latest.
Dr. Daniel La, with AFC Urgent Care, says the at-home tests were desperately needed in December and January when there were long lines at testing sites.
He says the effort by the federal government is too little, too late.
“As they saw it coming up, they should have sent it much earlier,” La says. “They sent it at the peak and yet we still haven’t received it and it’s already coming down on the decline.”
The U.S. Postal Service says tests are constantly being shipped, writing, “We’ve seen more than 60 million households request tests, and tens of millions have received them. This is huge demand and we’re making incredible progress. We appreciate the patience of those that have not yet received their tests.”
Some, however, think that by the time the tests are received, they’ll no longer be needed.
