Long Islanders are excited at the prospect of tax relief after state lawmakers proposed their fiscal spending plan. The plan includes a rebate for homeowners of $300 to $900, which officials expect to increase over the next three years. The budget increases school funding and provides an education tax credit of $330 for each school-age child. There is also a plan to eliminate sales tax on clothing items under $110. Massapequa superintendent Maureen Flaherty says the school district is not expecting a significant increase in the amount of funding. Governor Pataki says the legislature is spending too much money and he could veto parts of the budget.
