Long Island consumers stunned by gas prices for months are finally seeing some relief at the pump, but experts warn the lower prices might not last.
Motorists in Elmont Wednesday say they were pleasantly surprised to see gas prices under $3 a gallon. The Long Island Gas Realtors Association says prices have fallen about 10 cents a gallon over the last couple weeks because of a dip in crude oil prices and a surprise increase in nationwide gas inventories.
Many residents say gas is still too expensive and vow to look for alternatives, like riding a bike for short distances, until the price falls further. Experts warn the current lower prices might not last, citing hurricane season and the always unstable situation in the Middle East.
