As highway departments and utility companies across Long Island spent Wednesday making preparations ahead of the year's first significant snowstorm, many Long Islanders were bracing for the impact as well.
In Riverhead, Highway Superintendent George Woodson said his town was getting more road salt ready.
In Dix Hills, drivers at the Long Island Expressway rest stop said they were topping off their gas tanks and thinking of warmer days ahead.
"I'm going to be 70," said Kathy Hansen, of Medford. "If I was 30, I would have been so excited. I'm too old for this."
Basil Gomez said he wished his trip to Florida happened sooner.
"I'm going on the 16th," he said with a chuckle.
