Some Long Island heroes went from the battlefield to the ballfield on Saturday.
Thirteen veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and representing the Wounded Warrior Project took part in a Home Run Derby in Patchogue.
All of the veterans lost limbs in combat.
Players hit 49 home runs in the event, but say the hurdles they clear every day off the field are their real victories.
"I've told so many guys, you break a leg, you go in the trunk and put one on," says Matias Ferreira. "The way you look at it is you just have to be positive and keep going."
The participants also played a softball game against Suffolk County police officers.
All of the proceeds from the event were donated to a Long Island sixth-grader who was recently diagnosed with Leukemia.
