Long Island parents are expressing concern after a federal judge ruled the state must honor a settlement allowing thousands of convicted sex offenders to come off the registry.
The judge?s decision will allow 4,400 registered offenders to come off the books, despite tougher Megan?s Law requirements recently enacted. Many parents say they do not feel safe knowing a convicted offender could be living next door to them without their knowledge.
Suffolk Legislator Lou D?Amaro (D-North Babylon) has been pushing for civil confinement for sex offenders after they leave prison. He says he does not feel secure as an elected official allowing sex offenders in the community, even with the safeguards in place for tracking and registration.
