A Freeport native is free at last after her lifetime prison sentence was commuted by President Barack Obama.
Ramona Brant, 52, received a life sentence back in 1995 for a non-violent drug conspiracy conviction and was finally able to walk free on Sunday. At the time, a life sentence was mandatory for the charge.
"I was somewhat reluctant to walk freely because I was so used to being escorted out of that very gate with shackles on my feet and handcuffs," said Brant. "I was expecting someone to say 'sorry, wrong person, what are you doing, where are you going?'"
Brant is now headed to live with her two sons in North Carolina who were 3 and 4 years old at the time of her conviction.
