Sunday marked the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Irene, which wrought damage and flooding across of Long Island and the tri-state area.
Irene uprooted trees and whipped down utility lines, leaving hundreds of thousands of Long Islanders without power. Some were in the dark for days.
In Lindenhurst, residents say the floodwaters were waist-high when the storm struck.
Meteorologists say Irene also spawned a tornado and microburst on Long Island.
The 2011 storm had been the worst in recent memory -- until a year later, when Superstorm Sandy hit in October of 2012.
For some Long Islanders, recovery efforts in the wake of the two major storms continue today.
