Long Island joins the nation in remembering Pearl Harbor attack

Long Island and the rest of the nation Thursday are marking the 65th anniversary of the bombing on Pearl Harbor. One of the places honoring the victims who died there is Republic Airport in Farmingdale.

Long Island and the rest of the nation Thursday are marking the 65th anniversary of the bombing on Pearl Harbor. One of the places honoring the victims who died there is Republic Airport in Farmingdale. Vintage World War II planes took off from the airport and flew over the Statue of Liberty, dropping roses ceremoniously. Five survivors of the Pearl Harbor attack attended the ceremony.Republic Airport Director Michael Geiger said due to the September 11th attacks, a lot of planning and FAA approval were needed so the planes could fly over the city and the Statue of Liberty. Geiger, though, said it is always a wonderful experience to be able to see veterans from World War II be honored and reminisce.Nearly 500 survivors attended a ceremony at the site of the attack. The surprise attack killed more than 2,400 people and launched the United States into World War II.
