Residents and businesses on Long Island geared up to celebrate New Year’s Eve with COVID-19 precautions in place.
Normally, people would plan their New Year’s Eve celebrations with groups of people - but with COVID-19 cases rising across New York, many are staying home.
The traditional ball drops in Patchogue and Farmingdale were canceled for safety purposes.
Some residents told News 12 they wanted to take extra precaution because school starts up next week.
However, some places, like Mirabelle Restaurant and Tavern in Stony Brook, will continue celebrating while trying to stay safe.
"Our experience the last few weeks is that people who have booked large tables…they always find somebody in their group who is affected by the virus and then they cancel, so we don't have too many large tables,” says chef Guy Reuge.
The restaurant requires patrons to wear masks and has tables set up so social distancing can be maintained. It also offers outdoor igloos for families to enjoy.
