Drivers across Long Island are definitely feeling the pain at the pump with prices just above $3 a gallon at most stations.
Experts say the spike in gas prices is due to a rapid increase in demand for gasoline as the country emerges from the pandemic. Also, they say crude oil is trading around a multiyear high level pushing prices up.
AAA says the average price of gas on Long Island is $3.12 a gallon and a year ago it was at $2.16.
Robert Sinclair, of AAA, says motorists should be prepared to pay even more over the summer.
"I think it's only going to get worse because demand is going to pick up as we get past the Fourth of July and into the summer driving season. And also, we're deep into hurricane season. In fact, there's a storm brewing now right in the Gulf of Mexico, a major storm impacting the breadbasket of oil and gas infrastructure in the Gulf Coast can send prices much, much higher overnight. "
If you search around, you still can find some lower prices. One gas station in Hempstead was at $2.87 a gallon. Tell us how much you pay for gas.
