Today is Ash Wednesday, and Christians on Long Island and around the world are starting the Lenten season with a church visit.
Ash Wednesday kicks off Lent, which lasts until Easter Sunday. Clergy members will put ashes on worshiper's heads in the sign of the cross.
Catholics are not supposed to eat meat on Ash Wednesday. They also are expected to give up meat on Fridays during Lent.
Christians can choose to give up something they enjoy for the season of Lent.
Easter Sunday is April 12.
