Officials say there is the potential for slick roads and power outages during the rainstorm tonight and tomorrow. Crews at town highway departments have been clearing out storm drains and trimming weak tree branches to mitigate the potential damage from the storm. Some people like Kathy Massaro of North Bellmore got their errands done early. “That’s why I'm out now before it gets dark and before it really starts to pour," she said. Officials say be prepared for hazardous road conditions. “Tomorrow morning’s going to be brutal getting the kids, or getting yourself to work, want to tell residents take your time, take it easy, but most importantly be safe," said Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin. Clavin says highway department workers are cutting off weak tree limbs so high winds don’t blow them down and take out power lines, and raking out blocked storm drains so rainwater doesn’t flood roads. Spokespeople for the towns of Oyster Bay and Huntington say their road crews are doing their prep work too ahead of the storm. Some say they’ll hunker down and wait for the storm to pass. “Stay home, tomorrow’s St. Patrick’s Day, stay with the family, have fun," said Kevin O'Shea, of Bellmore. Officials recommend staying off the roads tonight during the storm and give yourself extra time for the morning commute.
