Lots of Long Islanders picked up ice melt, shovels and ice scrapers at Costello's Ace Hardware in North Bellmore ahead of tonight’s winter storm. "I'm picking up rock salt. I already got my shovels, but it's a double whammy week. I got my wife's birthday and Valentine's Day, so I got to prep," said Jim Giordano, of East Meadow. Managers say a seed spreader helps evenly distribute the ice melt. "Put some down before if really starts snowing heavily. Then after you're done shoveling the walkways and everything then put down a little more just to protect against the ice," said Howie Birenbaum, with Costello's Ace Hardware. Highway crews are gearing up to keep roads clear during the storm. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman says they have sand and plow trucks ready to roll. He also says power outages could be an issue. "Sometimes, with this type of precipitation, ice can form on powerlines and they can be brought down, or trees can be brought down, or limbs could crack," he said. Both Blakeman and Hempstead Mayor Waylyn Hobbs, Jr. urged motorists to stay off the roads. "Park in your driveway, because it helps us ensure that we get better coverage when pre-treating the road before the storm comes," said Hobbs, Jr.
